No Rima Reason: UNI hosts Montana in the UNI-Dome, Finally!

AaronBailey-2015EWU

In my first 22 years of broadcasting UNI Panther football I have never had a Montana AT UNI football game……that is because the 2 teams have never played in the UNI-Dome during the last 22 years.

As a matter of fact, Montana has only been to Cedar Falls one time to take on the Panthers. That was in 1987 in a game Montana would win 33-16. Darrell Mudra was the head coach of that UNI team that ended up going 10-4 and eventually losing in the FCS semifinals.

UNI has never beaten Montana. The Griz lead the series 5-0, sort of. Montana beat UNI in the FCS playoffs in 2011 48-10 but that win was vacated.

This from the July 26, 2013 Missoulian.com:

The University of Montana football program will serve three years on probation and vacate five wins, (from the 2011 season) including one against Montana State University and two playoff victories, as punishment for violating several NCAA rules governing student-athletes.

Finally, it is going to happen! Panther Nation has been waiting for this game since it was announced that the Grizzlies were coming to Cedar Falls. The game has the makings to be a good one, a real good one.

UNI is ranked 3rd in the nation in FCS football and is coming off a 25-20 win over Big 12 Iowa State. Montana enters the game rated 14th in FCS football and is also 1-0 after beating Saint Francis 41-31.

Both teams are led by an excellent senior quarterback. The Panthers have dual-threat QB Aaron Bailey. Bailey led UNI in rushing last year and would lead the Panthers in rushing in their season opener with 114 yards and 1 touchdown in a 25-20 win over Iowa State. He also threw for one score.

Montana is led by 6′ 7″ Brady Gustafson, also a senior, who threw for 353 yards in their season opening win over FCS Saint Francis. He would throw three touchdown passes and run for two more.

Both UNI and Montana were picked to finish second in their conference in their pre-season poll. UNI picked to finish second in the MVFC behind 5-time FCS national champions North Dakota State and Montana picked to finish second in the Big Sky behind Northern Arizona (media poll and coaches poll-Portland St and Montana tied for 2nd in the coaches pre season media poll).
