The UNI Panther women’s basketball team split its road trip last week, dropping a 64-60 contest Friday at the Loyola Ramblers before bouncing back Sunday with a 55-47 win at the Bradley Braves. UNI finished the weekend tied for first place at 7-2 with Missouri State and Drake in arguably the tightest conference race ever…

For the first time in Missouri Valley Conference women’s basketball history, there is a three-way tie for first place midway through conference play. This is also the first time that the top five teams are all within a game of each other (Loyola, Southern Illinois at 6-3) at the midpoint of the league’s double round-robin schedule.

Loyola broke a late tie against UNI Friday to grab the four-point victory. Grace Goodhart nailed a deep three-pointer with 12 seconds to go, and the Panthers were unable to answer with a three-pointer, missing a last-second shot in a tough loss.

Head coach Tanya Warren earned her 150th career victory Sunday with the Panthers’ eight-point triumph. In another close contest, UNI’s 9-0 tie-breaking run in the fourth quarter defeated Bradley to finish the first round of conference play.

Interesting notes from the weekend:

  1. Panther pair closing in on 1,000 points
Madison Weekly (980 career points) and Jen Keitel (927) both have a chance to reach the milestone within the next several weeks
  2. Lamar rising towards Top Ten charts
Sharnae Lamar has 109 assists this season and 260 assists in her career, both sitting just outside UNI’s single-season, career top ten lists
  3. Sorenson keeps record pace behind arc
Amber Sorenson is on pace to hit 96 three-pointers (through 30 games [minimum]), which would break Jacqui Kalin‘s program record (89)
  4. UNI shares first place at MVC midpoint
The Panthers are in first place midway through conference play for the second time in program history (2010-11 [8-1], finished 17-1 [1st])
  5. Panthers play without fouling Sunday
UNI only committed 7 fouls at Bradley, its lowest total ever under Tanya Warren and its fewest committed since March 4, 2004 versus Indiana State (7)
