Rima Reviews – Movie Review – ‘UNBROKEN’

If you have read some of my previous movie reviews then you know that I love ‘true story’ movies, or movies ‘based on a true story.’

Well, I went to the movie UNBROKEN on Friday night and it was fabulous.

The movie is based on Laura Hillenbrand’s best-selling 2010 book about Louis ‘Louie’ Zamperini, also called Unbroken.

Zamperini’s family immigrated to the United States from Italy and the film is about the life of Zamperini. And what an incredible story and life it was! From his childhood troubles, to running in the Olympics, to serving in World War II and getting captured by the Japanese when his fighter plane went down in the Pacific.UNBROKEN-movieposter

I don’t want to give away too much information but Zamperini was an Olympic runner when he was in high school, a World War II aviator who managed to survive a plane crash spending days in a small raft in the Pacific while sharks circled him. When he and a fellow serviceman, Phil, were captured by the Japanese the story turns brutal and extremely ugly. At times showing the brutal beatings he took over two years in a series of Japanese internment camps. The US Army Air Corps actually declared him dead in 1943 but Zamperini defied all expectations.

I thought the acting was terrific, along with the overall production of the movie. Angelina Jolie was the director of this film and did an outstanding job. How in the world Louie survived the punishment and brutal beatings he took is beyond me. I have always held all members of our armed forces in high regard but after seeing this movie my respect goes to a whole new level!

If you go to this movie make sure you stay right to the end and read the printed information about Louie. It tells a bit more about his life after the film’s final scene.

To get the full story buy and read Laura Hillenbrand’s best selling book also titled ‘Unbroken‘.

I highly recommend this movie and give it: (4 1/2)
