No Rima Reason – UNI Mens Basketball Exhibition Opener Thursday Night

Ben Jacobson starts his 9th season as the head mens basketball coach at UNI this Thursday night as the Panthers play their first of two exhibition games. UNI will play host to Division 2 Upper Iowa University who are led by former Panther and now Peacock head coach Brooks McKowen.

Here’s 10 things on the UNI exhibition opener:

1) UNI has never lost an exhibition game with Coach Jacobson as part of the UNI coaching staff. The Panthers are 26-0 since Coach Jake’s arrival in 2001-2002 season.

2) The last time UNI and UIU played against each other was during the 2009-10 season with UNI grabbing a 67-39 win.

3) This is the first of two exhibition basketball games for UNI against Division 2 teams out of the Northern Sun Conference. UNI’s other exhibition game will be Sunday, November 9th against Bemidji State. That game will begin at 1pm at the McLeod Center in Cedar Falls.

4) The Panthers return all five starters and 10 letterwinners off last years 16-15 squad.

5) Seven players could possibly make their debut as a UNI Panther. The five student-athletes who redshirted last year include forward Klint Carlson, forward/center Bennett Koch and guards Robert Knar and Kasey Semler. Redshirt junior Paul Jesperson is eligible to play after transferring to UNI last year from Virginia. Two newcomers that could play are true freshman guard Wyatt Lohaus and JUCO transfer Taylor Olson. Olson transferred after playing two years at Kirkwood Community College.

6) UNI returns 91.2% of its scoring and 91.4% of its rebounding from last season.

7) UNI’s entire coaching staff is back intact after last year. Assistants include P.J. Hogan, Kyle Green and Erik Crawford. Derrik Nettin is the Director of Basketball Operations and Johnny Moran is back as the Graduate Manager.

8) Look for Deon Mitchell, Matt Bohannon and Seth Tuttle to start on Thursday night. The other two starters will come from Marvin Singleton, Paul Jesperson, Jeremy Morgan and Wes Washpun.

9) Don’t look for Nate Buss to play in this exhibition opener. He is nursing a sore foot and sore big toe. Buss is expected to be ready for UNI’s season opener November 15th vs UND.

10) One thing I expect to see on Thursday night is a really good 3-point shooting team. Matt Bohannon, Deon Mitchell and Paul Jesperson have shot the three really well. And Deon won the 3-point shooting contest at McLeod Madness last Thursday night. Reports say that both Deon and Bo are shooting it at a really high percentage so far in their practices.

  • Game time is 7pm this Thursday night in the McLeod Center. Admission is just $1.00.
