No Rima Reason – Inside The Numbers of a 27-13 Win over WIU

The #23 ranked UNI Panther football team picked up a much needed MVFC win on Saturday over Western Illinois in Macomb, Ill. The Panthers won it 27-13 and the win evened their conference record at 2-2 and overall mark at 4-4. Let’s take a look ‘inside the numbers’ of this Panther victory!

2: How many conference road games UNI has now won this year! They Panthers have only played one home conference game and now get to play three of their last four MVFC contests at home in the UNI Dome.

83: How many offensive plays UNI ran on Saturday. Brion Carnes would start at quarterback for the first time this year and He would be under center (or in pistol/shot gun formation) for all 83 plays.

In the win he almost threw as many passes as he had in the first seven games combined. On this day Brion completed 57% of his passes for 239 yards with a long of 24.

37: The number of yards that Western Illinois would gain on the ground as a team.

165: UNI would get the rushing game back on track in this win, gaining 165 yards on the ground.

146: The number of yards rushing that David Johnson would get in the game. He had a long of 27 yards and scored twice.

5: How many yards ‘The Beast’ would average per carry. 29 carries and 146 yards.

3,922: DJ now has this many total career rushing yards as a UNI Panther.

82: How many yards David Johnson needs to become the all-time career rushing leader in UNI Panther football history. Corey Lewis holds the record with 4,003. David passed Jeff Stovall for the number 2 spot. Stovall rushed for 3,835 for the Panthers.

4 for 4: UNI continues to be one of the best teams in the nation in red zone scoring. The Panthers would get in the red zone four times and score on all four chances.

3 of 4: How many touchdowns UNI would score once they got into the red zone.

1 of 13: UNI’s defense was really good at getting stops on 3rd down in this game. WIU was just 1 of 13 in 3rd down conversions.

14: How many tackles senior linebacker Max Busher would have to lead the UNI defense in the category. Busher also had 1 interception and 1 pass break up.

11: How many more minutes that UNI would possess the football versus Western Illinois. UNI would have the football for 35 minutes and 30 seconds while WIU possessed it for just 24 minutes and 30 seconds.

9: How many points UNI kicker Michael Schmadeke scored. ‘Auto-Schmadic’ was 2 for 2 in field goal tries hitting a career long 49 yarder along with a 32 yard try. He also converted 3 extra points.

1: How many touchdown passes Brion Carnes threw and how many touchdown receptions Chad Owens caught. The 20 yard touchdown pass play from Carnes to Owens was Owens first touchdown catch of the year and the 10th of his career.

UNI now returns home this Saturday to host the top ten ranked and undefeated Illinois State Redbirds. Illinois State improved to 7-0 and 4-0 in the MVFC with a 21-7 home win over Missouri State.
