RRR – Rima Restaurant Review – Howler’s Bar & Grille – Vermillion, SD

Howlers Bar and Grille logo

In my travels as a sports broadcaster I get to spend some time dining at some of the more interesting places in the cities I travel to. I always to try to eat a local place that is unique to the city I am in and not a franchise type eating establishment that you can go to back home. While in Vermillion, SD to broadcast the UNI football game there on Oct. 11 I did just that.

I arrived in Vermillion Friday night around 7:30 pm and once I get checked into my hotel I wanted to grab something to eat. I was in Vermillion two years ago to cover a UNI game there and I remembered a sports bar and grill right across the street from the Dakota Dome so I headed that way. My memory did not let me down. There sat Howler’s Bar & Grille. Howlers is a local establishment that is a sports bar and grill, bowling alley along with a room that they called a “casino”. A true sports lovers paradise.

Appearance: From the outside it looked well kept and inviting. There were two entrance doors and of course I tried to go in the entrance closest to where I parked and that one was locked. It also looked like a banquet room that was attached to Howler’s and wasn’t open at the time. I walked down the sidewalk 15 steps and there I found the main entrance and stepped in. I have to admit I was a bit embarrassed as there was a couple standing on the sidewalk near the entrance that was open and they must of thought I was some kind weirdo trying to go in the doors I did.Howlers Bar and Grille As soon as I stepped inside it had a “welcoming” feeling to it. It was laid out well with high bar tables and some regular lower tables and booths with more of a V shaped bar than a U but it looked good. It was well lit but not too bright. I prefer a softly lit sports bar and grill instead of one that is really bright so I liked how Howler’s felt. They had a number of HD TV’s up with various sporting events on. They were positioned well so you could see a number of them and

Service: Since I was by myself I sat at the bar. I was waited on immediately even though there was decent crowd sitting around the bar. The male bartender was very good and took my drink order and brought a menu. He was in a conversation with a big hockey fan at the bar just to my left but I felt welcomed by the bartender and he provided excellent service during my time there.

The Menu: .Howler’s had a big menu with a lot of choices. All of their burgers looked really good and they had one that was called a “Bimbo” burger that had some kind of long standing history in Vermillion. They also had other sandwiches like chicken and fish and you could order a full dinner like steak or prime rib. With the large menu selections that Howler’s offered anybody of any age could easily find something they liked.

The Food: I really didn’t want to do a hamburger especially since I noticed they had a prime rib sandwich on the menu.Howlers Bar and Grill2 I also didn’t want to do a full dinner like a steak so I ordered the prime rib sandwich including some of their special horseradish sauce that you could put on it but hold the onions.  Wow….was it good. The prime rib was tender and delicious. The bun was fresh and just the right size to hold all that meat in. I was glad I ordered it and the portion was perfect. A side salad came with it and the serving size was just right too. It was just right for a good pre game meal before the big game.

Miscellaneous:  Howler’s had an excellent location right across the street from the Dakota Dome and they do a good job of appealing not only to the locals but to those coming to events at the dome. Just looking around at the walls and all the specials it appears Howler’s does a great job of offering their customers a lot of different drink and food specials throughout the week.  Howler’s on special nights also offers some entertainment. Here is an example of a week long specials list off their facebook page:
