Panthers reach 1000th win with 3-0 victory against Southern Illinois (UNI Athletic Communications)

It’s good to be the UNI Panther volleyball team! This week, the Panthers earned 3-0 sweeps at the McLeod Center against the Evansville Purple Aces and the Southern Illinois Salukis. Those wins kept UNI undefeated in Missouri Valley Conference play (7-0, 12-6 overall) and tied for first place with the Illinois State Redbirds, but they also pushed UNI up to 1000 wins in program history. Below, match point and the postgame interview with assistant Kalani Mahi:

Beyond the historic milestone, the Panthers played arguably their best total weekend of volleyball this season. UNI won all six sets this weekend in a pair of sweeps, taking all frames by six points or more. UNI’s offense hit .349 and .322 in its victories with only 12 unforced attack errors in six sets. The Panthers served up 12 aces (two per set) compared to five service errors and just four aces allowed. Plus, UNI’s defense, which ranked eighth nationally in digs/set (17.4), recorded 113 digs for a weekend average of 18.83!

Individually, Autumn Alitz had a phenomenal weekend. Alitz had 22 kills with just two errors on 35 attacks (22-2-35) for a .571 clip while also posting seven blocks. She also rattled off four straight kills in a go-ahead run in the first set against SIU and started that match 8-for-8! Also, Eryca Hingtgen reached a personal milestone with her 500th career kill during Friday’s sweep over Evansville.

Next week, the 7-0 Panthers start a road trip at the 7-0 Illinois State Redbirds on Friday before facing the Indiana State Sycamores on Saturday. Within MVC action, the Redbirds have an edge in hitting, kills, and assists while the Panthers are up in blocks, aces, and digs. The Sycamores are a tough team at home with a 6-1 mark in Terre Haute (only loss to Illinois State).
