RRR – Rima Restaurant Review – Bagger Dave’s Burger Tavern – Terra Haute

In my travels with UNI football and mens basketball it is always fun to go out to eat at places you can’t in the Cedar Valley.

So on the trip to Terra Haute, Indiana for UNI football on Saturday, October 4th I got the opportunity to do just that.

I arrived in Terra Haute early Friday evening and after getting checked in to my hotel room I started to scout around for a place to go for supper. Their was a TGIFriday’s right across the street from the hotel and some in the traveling party were talking about going there for supper. But I’ve been to a TGIF’s a number of times as they are all over the country. I wanted to try some place that was new and different. Then I talked with my ON PRESS ROW radio show in studio producer Cole “The Sports” Bair  who was on the trip and he was at a place called Bagger Dave’s Burger Tavern located right next door to TGIF’s. Bingo! New. Different. Had never been to one! Well, decision made. Bagger Dave’s it is! And I was impressed with the place! Here is my review.

Appearance: From the outside it didn’t look like much.

It was located at the mall with an outside entrance of its own. To be honest from the outside it didn’t look like much. (I think I have said that twice now!) But once you got inside it was a cool looking, well lit, comfortable spot. They had some flat screen HD TV’s. So if you wanted to watch sports you could. They also had a model train that was running around a track throughout the bar – just below the ceiling – that was a nice touch. It was clean looking and a very inviting atmosphere. For overall appearance I give it 3 1/2 OH BABY’s  OH BABY’s OH BABY’s OH B Service: I am big on the “service type business’s” delivering  great service. I owned a sports bar and grill for 9 years and one thing I stressed to all of my employees is that you work in the “people business” or “service” industry. Your job is to wait on and serve the customer. And that service needs to be great. Not just good. Great. With that said sometimes my grading of what type of service I get at a restaurant, café or bar can be rather tough. I thought the service was great on my first trip to Bagger Dave’s in Terra Haute. The young man that waited on me knew his stuff. They had a number of craft beers available and when I was struggling to decide what I wanted for a cold adult beverage he immediately offered a sample of one of their brews on tap.

Even though I settled on a traditional American made Bud Light I liked the chance to sample one of their craft beers the server suggested. He was also quick to answer any questions I had on the menu and once I got my food wanted to make sure everything was good. I would have given them my first 5 OH BABY rating in service but upon entering 2 workers were right near the entrance and there was no “hi” or “welcome, there is open seating.” Or, “we will seat you.” Nothing. Just a minor infraction because as I watched it appeared it was a place where you came in, found a spot, then be waited on. But I always feel you should greet your guests with at least  a “hi” or “welcome” as they come in the front door so that kept them from getting 5 OB’s!

  • For service I give them 4 OH BABY’s OH BABY’s OH BABY’s OH BABY’s

The Menu: Bagger Dave’s Burger Tavern lives up to their name and has some great “burgers” to chose from. Along with a huge burger menu with numerous options they offer turkey, chicken, tuna, BLT’s and an Italian beef sandwich too. Their menu also includes salads and appetizers including fresh cut French fries and sweet potato chips. There is also handcrafted Artisan Mac and Cheese ( I wish i would have tried this) and Turkey Black Bean Chili. To me the menu was just right. Not overwhelming but great choices with numerous ways to have your sandwich made.

The Food: The food was excellent! All I had was one of their burgers, but it was as good a burger as I have ever had! They advertise their burgers as “prime rib” hamburgers. And they were – well – prime!

I was trying to decide between getting the 4 0z prime rib hamburger or the 8 oz. I settled on the 8 oz. and was glad I did. It was delicious and cooked perfectly for my liking. And really fresh. I liked the burger options you have also with the ability to ‘build your own”. You decide on bun type, burger size, toppings and condiments. The only thing I regret is not trying a few other things on the menu like an appetizer, the Mac and Cheese or the chili!

Miscellaneous: One thing you always hope happens when you go out to eat besides getting good service and good food is that the price is right. I thought the pricing of their food and drinks was very reasonable. When the food is good you don’t mind paying a little bit more. But I did not feel like anything was over priced. You pay for a good atmosphere and service and you got all that at a fair price at Bagger Dave’s. Also I should mention that sometimes when you are enjoying a meal with other people it just tastes better. Have you ever noticed that? On this night I joined Cole Bair, Jordie Lindley and Austin Hansen who are all part of the UNI media relations department. (By the way Jordie’s turkey chili looked really really good!) The other thing I noticed was that all four of us enjoyed the place and their food. Sometimes with a group, large or small, someone’s food maybe isn’t the best. Or the service for them is not that good. That was not the case. Everyone seemed to enjoy Bagger Dave’s. Final Thought: Bagger Dave’s Burger Tavern is a franchise that is just in the states of Indiana and Michigan. There are currently about 26 of them in the two states. I look for Bagger Dave’s to start to crop up in other Midwest states real soon. If I ever get back into the bar business this is the type of place I would create. Nice atmosphere with TV’s up all over and a large selection of beers and burgers! The Sportsguys Burger Bar. Or Gary Rima’s Sports Bar and Burger Grill. Or…OH BABY’s Burger Bar? Hmmmm, they all have a pretty good ring to them, don’t they?

  • My overall rating for Bagger Dave’s Burger Tavern: 4 OH BABY’s OH BABY’s OH BABY’s OH BABY’s
