Gary Rima “The Sportsguy”

I’m in my 22nd year as the radio play-by-play voice of UNI men’s basketball and 21st year with UNI football. I’m a 2 time winner of the Iowa Sportscaster of the Year Award from the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association and this year will be my 41st in sports broadcasting.

I also host a one hour daily sports talk show, ON PRESS ROW with The Sportsguy, on Newstalk 1540 KXEL, which is in its 9th year, and airs at 5pm Monday through Friday.

During the fall you can also catch me at The Other Place on University Avenue in Cedar Falls on most Thursday nights – hosting the Mark Farley or Ben Jacobson call in shows.

I am married to Marla Kay, who is a school teacher and high school cheerleading coach at Charles City. I have four children, 3 step children and 8, soon to be 9, grandchildren.

My oldest son Todd is the Head Baseball coach at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Scott lives in Dubuque and is the Body Shop Manager for the Dubuque Auto Plaza. Travis is a Recreational Director in charge of all the softball played at The Villages in Florida and daughter Kaley is a Senior at UNI getting her degree in Interior Design. Step daughter Susan lives in Virginia, studying education. Step-son Anthony is the head security guard at Jordan Creek Mall in West Des Moines, and step-son Steven is a senior at Charles City High.

Here are some things you may not of known about me

a) I graduated from Starmont High School in 1973 and lettered in 13 varsity sports. I was the first Starmont athlete to be named 1st team all conference in the Tri Rivers (baseball).

b) I did not got to college and get a degree. I am a self taught radio sports broadcaster. My first job in radio was at the old KOUR in Independence at the age of 19

c) I have played sports, umpired and refereed sports. I’ve coached sports including baseball and basketball along with doing sports broadcasting.

d) I coached and took over 30 youth sports teams in either baseball, softball or basketball to World Series or National Championship Tournaments. Oelwein Hustlers, TEAM Iowa Hustlers, Oelwein Hustle, TEAM Iowa Hustle (AAU, USSSA, CABA, NAFA). My 2009 TEAM Iowa Hustle 18U girls softball team won the NAFA World Series championship.

d) I was Rick Heller’s assistant baseball coach at Upper Iowa for three seasons in his 1st three years at UIU

e) I ran a semi-pro baseball team for 13 summers in my home town called the Strawberry Point Cubs and was a player/head coach.

f) I was the General Manager of the Waterloo Bucks summer collegiate baseball team for five seasons from 1999-2003, winning the last Bucks NWL title in 2002.
